Root Canal

The root canal is the most common procedure performed by an endodontist. During the root canal procedure, the endodontist removes damaged pulp from within the root canal of a tooth. This treatment is required when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to tooth decay, tooth cracks, or repeated dental work on the same tooth. Tooth sensitivity to heat, cold, or touch, as well as sensitivity in the lymph nodes, surrounding bone, or gingival tissues, all can be signs indicating the need for endodontic treatment.

What is a root canal?

The roots and interior portions of your teeth have tiny canals within them that can become infected. This can lead to the pulp inside your teeth also becoming infected. In order to remove this infection, either your dentist or your endodontist performs a root canal procedure. The canals are cleaned and then filled and the tooth receives either a filling or a crown.

Who is a candidate for a root canal?

Your endodontist may recommend a root canal when your tooth is infected or if there is severe damage to the pulp. An untreated cavity is the most common cause for this type of infection. The pulp inside the tooth can also become inflamed from trauma or extensive restorative dental work. This inflammation usually leads to infection. Tooth pain is the most common symptom indicating the possible need for a root canal.
